  • Jimmy Lee Sudduth

"Kindred Spirits of Alabama" pulls together the work of Jimmie Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, Annie Tolliver and Charlie Lucas as collected on a recent visit to the artists homes in June by Garde Rail. All native Alabamians, they are some of the most important self-taught artists of the twentieth century.

Jimmie Lee Sudduth came to the fore in the 1970's with his finger painted scenes of rural life and portraits done in rich hues of Alabama mud and natural pigments. He also blows a mean harp.

Mose Tolliver also gained recognition in the 1970's, with his beautiful self-portraits, "moose ladies", and flowers and animals. In the 80's, demand for his work became so high that he enlisted his children to help out with his "pictures", and in 1989, his daughter Annie Tolliver struck out on her own. She paints in a similar style to her father but from more of a storytelling slant and with bright, playful colours.

We didn't expect to meet Charlie Lucas but we're sure glad that we did. The "Tin Man" began creating his "toys" in 1984, after a de habilitating accident left him bedridden. His sculptures are intense creations wrought from scrap metal and a child-like vision. Charlie encourages you all to "flip up your skirt" and get naked.

There will also be pieces by Sybil Gibson and Jewel Starday in the show.

Celebration begins Friday July 3rd, 7pm. We will also celebrate Mose Tolliver's birthday (which is July 4th) with beer, wine, boiled p-nuts and cake.
