![]() Celebrating our one year anniversary, Garde Rail Gallery presents "Best of the Northwest", the first annual self-taught and outsider show focusing on local talent. Featured artists include Rosemary Pittman, Ree Brown, Antjuan Oden, Tim Fowler, Von Nell, Wally Shoup, and Michael Tippett. This show opens, First Thursday, June 3, 1999, from 6 until 9pm. "Best of the Northwest" runs through June 26. Rosemary Pittman was born in 1916 in the mid-west and has lived in Seattle since the 1940's. A nurse, now retired, Rosemary is a memory painter and is known for her "quilt" paintings, large pieces on masonite consisting of individual sections, each depicting unique subjects, usually friends or relatives from her past. Rosemary's work is shown at The Outsider Art Fair, and appears in 20th Century American Folk, Self-taught and Outsider Art by Betty Carol Sellen and The Encyclopedia of 20th Century American Folk Art and Artists by Chuck and Jan Rosenak.
"Best of the Northwest" celebrates the singularity of Northwest self-taught and outsider art. From Tim Fowler's wood carvings of "occupational gods", Ree Brown's delicate paintings, and Von Nell's healing processes, to Stephen Powers' architectural visions, Antjuan Oden's word and symbols, and Michael Tippett's bright, urban scenes, "Best of the Northwest" showcases vernacular talent. |
